I think I scared my dog

So tonight was the finale of "So You Think You Can Dance". I am brave enough to admit that I love this show. The performers are truly talented, and for once I feel like the eliminations are not just based on popularity but actual knowledge*. There's not a Sanjaya in the whole top 20. Plus, what else is there to watch in the summertime?

That being said, I was very excited about tonight's finale. I thought that the top 4 were all deserving of the win, although I must confess that I really didn't want Lacey or Neil to take it all. Lacey's an excellent performer, but a) oversold almost every performance with her facial expressions and her pointing and b) never was as strong or had as much polish as the other three. Neil improved so much throughout the show, but I felt that if he won it, it would just be due to the screaming pre-teen/teenage popular vote. Sabra has been a favorite of mine, coming to the forefront halfway in the season, and Danny is just amazing every time he performs. Not only could he nail 8 pirouettes in a row, but could also come out of them just as smoothly as he performed them. I couldn't figure out who I liked more, so basically I voted for the both of them. (But voted for Sabra more.)

So hurrah for me! Sabra won and I won the self satisfaction of knowing that I was in the right corner in the end. I realize that it's quite a dumb thing to be so self satisfied about choosing the correct winner of a reality show, but I really do get sucked into these shows and get angry or ecstatic about who wins or loses. (Congratulations, Networks) Maybe I'm just compensating for the fact that I spend so much of my time watching these things. I have to justify its' importance in culture or something. I almost had a heart attack at the end of Amazing Race 3 when Chip and Kim were racing against friggin' Colin and Christie.

So don't make fun. I like my stories. Hey, I don't make fun of you and your hobbies do I? Unless it's something silly, like collecting the 50 state quarters and putting them in that tiny map of America. I don't hate America, I just hate people who collect quarters of America.

Anyway, couple of thoughts:
1) After spending so much time on the previous contestants in pre-taped packages, they spend maybe 30 seconds on Sabra after she was announced the winner. Cat Deeley announced it and then confetti came down and all of a sudden, I'm looking at the highlights for the 10 o'clock news. "I don't care that you've got info on the Peruvian earthquake, I want to see Sabra cry and be congratulated!" They also kinda screwed with Danny. For being the first runner up, we sure kicked him out of the bed quickly. Neil and Lacey got eliminated early, so there was sappy montages of them and flowers and all that. What did Danny get? Well, Danny got to be the first to congratulate Sabra, and that, no matter how much he loves her, had to suck. Just for a bit.

2) The highly touted dance between Nigel and Cat turned out to be some stupid Mexican hat dance clip from the guys at Jib Jab. Just random bodies and Nigel & Cat's cut out heads. Don't tout the thing for days and then give us that. Lame.**

3) The fact that Sara did 3 of the "Choreographers' favorite" performances tonight. She was in 3 of the best dances, yet still got voted out early. My pick for the "America got it wrong" award.

4) Cats' Dress. Ugh. Lady, why do you have to wear possibly the ugliest dress that you've worn all season to the most important show? It's like she got up today and thought, "Well, this is kinda like the enda high school, all this sayin' g'bye an' such. Why don't I wer somethin' that looks like me ol' Prom dress afta I spilled wine on it and used it to scruub the back of the limo when me prom date passed ou' and threw up on the seat? Yes, I think I'll do that." (Sorry, I don't know why I gave her a cockney accent)

Anyway, even though I had these issues with the show, I still loved watching it this summer. I think I scared my dog when I applauded and cheered when Sabra won. Sorry, Barney. It was better than the previous two seasons, and I'll be sad until it comes back next year. You've got all year to get a better wardrobe, Miss Deeley!

* The judges get to eliminate one guy/girl after America chooses the bottom three (with the top 20). Then, after that, America (or as Deeley likes to say it, Ameerika) gets to eliminate (with the top 10).

**At least it wasn't like the trainwreck of Season One when Lauren (I have no clue, but I'll smile real big and show my body) Sanchez danced with Nigel. Oof, was that painful.

Below, one of my favorite dances from Sabra, Season 3 winner of So You Think You Can Dance:
