For those like me, who have found themselves way behind on Christmas gift purchasing, I humbly offer up the Threadless T-shirt sale. They're comfy, fun, and more importantly, if you get there through this link , I'll get a discount on my next purchase. Everybody wins! Hurry though, because the sale ends Dec. 16th. Here's a fun thing for those who liked those old Rankin/Bass Christmas specials. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to try and keep my sanity at the mall.

Dapples from Movies & TV: Celeb sightings

Whenever I talk to friends from out of town, they always ask me if I've met anyone famous. Given that I've lived in LA for almost all of my life, I have to say yes. But then, I can never think of anyone off the top of my head. And I think it's because of this: LA is the home of tons of celebrities. It's their little comfort zone. So, if I see Arsenio Hall at the Pier 1 Imports on Ventura buying throw pillows with his wife (true story), then I don't want to bother them and go on about how much I like their movie/show/blog/record/children's name. Let them be and live their lives like any normal, non-star/celebrity. That's how I would want to be treated if I were to become an international superstar. HOWEVER, they are still everywhere and with this blog, I will document the celebs that I see around town. I am not Gawker or Defamer and will not note precise details like time of day and intersections and all that. Not that there's anything wrong with that....

Quick Review of the new F'nE: "Frankly, I'm underwhelmed."

Image
Tesco's new Fresh and Easy opened up Thursday in 6 different cities. My friends and I have been anxiously awaiting the opening because that area was in desparate need of another supermarket. If the Hubband and I wanted to make waffles on Saturday morning but didn't have enough eggs, we'd have to schlep all the way down to the not-so-great Ralphs on Colorado & Verdugo (not far really, but we're lazy - it's the weekend after all) Plus, the F'nE was touted as a grocery store with "Lots of fresh and wholesome food choices, including prepared meals and organic foods, [that] make healthy eating easy and affordable." So, we went to opening day over at the F'nE, and I'm still trying to figure out how best to describe the place. To quote a certain funny, fabulous judge on Project Runway, "Frankly, I'm underwhelmed." It was like a Trader Joe sized Costco. It was very industrial and wherehouse-y on the inside. Much smaller t...

Yay for America!

Image
There's an article in the The U.K.'s Daily Mail today that, frankly, makes me thankful to be an American. There are things in pop culture/society that I am really not proud of (Paris, OJ, botox, high speed freeway chases) but at least we didn't come up with this: (Be prepared: There's a pic in the article that might not be SFW) How a bowl of warm water can help you buy a bra that fits better Here are some snippets of the article: "Now style gurus Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine appear to have gone one step further, by encouraging women to plunge their breasts into water to help them work out the exact size of their bosoms. The bizarre technique, they say, is a far more accurate because it determines the weight, rather than the cup size of a woman's breasts." And my personal favorite: "But after dunking her assets into a bowl of luke warm water, design engineer Dr John Tyrer, was able to work out that Susannah's breasts weighed two pound...

Louis Stevens busted!

Image
This morning I read that actor, Shia LeBeouf, was busted in Chicago for not leaving a Walgreens. The article from cbs4denver.com states: 'Transformers' Star Shia LaBeouf Arrested (CBS) CHICAGO You may have seen him stubbornly standing up to an invasion of evil robots this summer in "Transformers," but if you were in downtown Chicago early Sunday, you may have seen him stubbornly standing up to security guards at a local Walgreens. Chicago police say Shia LaBeouf was arrested at the Walgreens around 2:30 a.m. Sunday after refusing to leave the store. A security guard repeatedly told LaBeouf that he wasn't welcome and had to leave because he appeared to be drunk, police said. When the actor refused to leave, the security guard detained him and called police. After he was arrested, LaBeouf was "very courteous and polite," and he posted bond before 7 a.m., police said. LaBeouf, 21, of Glendale, Calif., was charged with misdemeanor crimina...

Dapples from TV: A Barker-less "Price is Right"

I tivo'd the first show of "The Price Is Right" with new host Drew Carey on Monday, and my snap judgement is that it's pretty good. Drew Carey is no Bob Barker and at times seemed to lose control over the audience (a host no-no). However, he was in his own way, still very charming and seemed to really enjoy being up there. Plus, all the games are the same comfortable ones that you used to watch when you were home sick with the flu. I think in time he'll get more comfortable and will be able to handle the crowd and the game like an old pro. I have to keep reminding myself that Barker hosted the show for years and to really be able to compare the two, I'll have to wait until Carey hosts until his flat top haircut turns white as well. This clip has been on the Internet for about a week or so, as far as I can tell and it HI-LARIOUS! I highly recommend you watching. This woman is living out a dream of mine, albeit, with more gross results. p.s. I would never...

Dapples from the Movies - Beginnings and Endings

Image
Movies are a hobby of mine, I guess you could say. I'm not a film school geek, but I can turn a phrase here or there (The color timing on Traffic was great because it helped separate the 3 different storylines throughout the movie). And I watch a lot of movies and television, movies about television, TV shows about movies, etc. A lot. To put it simply, I enjoy watching the picture shows. Plus, my job pretty much centers around it and TV, so it surrounds me all day. Which is great. Anyway, every now and then, I'll have a few observations from the movies or TV shows that I have been watching. Hence, my new series "Dapples from the Movies (or TV)". Just little blogs about what's going on and what I think about them. We'll see how it goes... p.s. I'm just one lady with an opinion, so you know, take it with a grain of salt. Beginnings and Endings Given that we just ended the summer rush of high priced blockbusters and have just begun to get into ...

Season 2 Premiere of "Friday Night Lights" is tonight! Watch it! Watch it! Watch it!

TV Tidbits

Ok, so I just tried to write some great synopsis of "Pushing Daisies" that debuted Wednesday on ABC, as well as champion the great "Friday Night Lights" that premieres Friday on NBC. It was going to be great! The surreal "Daisies" vs. the real "FNL". However, every time I try, I either a) get interrupted to work (the gall!) or b) get distracted by the fact that Lindsay don't writ no good . So, here's what I have to say about these two shows, in a nutshell: * Pushing Daisies - ABC Wednesdays: I liked this show, up until about 40 minutes in. It was really well designed and super super quirky and kinda funny, with a pretty good cast. Then the cute whimsical factor started getting on my nerves. I really wonder how long they will be able to continue this show without the ideas and themes getting old and annoying. Really? They hold hands with themselves in place of holding hands with each other? Rea...

I Wanna Rock 'N Roll All Nite...

Image
The Hubband just got his XBox 360 Console back from the shop today* and we celebrated the occasion by playing the greatest game ever. Guitar Hero II . For those of you not familiar with it, it's a videogame in which you play a toy guitar along to several famous rock songs that play on your tv. There are colored frets and a strum bar on the guitar and your job is to play the notes on your guitar as the notes with the corresponding colors fly across your screen. It sounds really complicated, but it's actually really fun. And I don't really play videogames at all. Super Mario Bros. 3 (2 didn't really float my boat) or Mega Man is more my speed ( I guess I left my videogame thumbs at college in the late 90's). The Hubband, on the other hand, loves those first person shooter games, like Halo or more importantly, Splinter Cell . Me == Him == I think one of the reasons why I love this game is because I'm actually kinda proficient at it. If I play the ...

A Letter To The Idiot Mustang Driver

Dear Mr. Mustang Driver, Today while making my weekly commute over the hill to work via Laurel Canyon, we were stuck is some pretty lame traffic. The two lanes heading into Hollywood were both congested from the top of the hill at Mullholland down almost to the light at Fryman. If I were in a hurry, I'd be pissed, but as I have learned over the last couple of weeks since school started up again, this is the norm. It's always slow. All of us cars were stacked in line, inching forward three feet at a time, trying to gauge whether the right or the left lane would be faster to the top. Each of us alone in our cars, yet united, suffering from a irritating pain in the neck. Maybe you didn't know that it was normal to be slow. Maybe you didn't realize that we were not going to quickly zip right up the hill. Maybe you were thinking that the traffic was more like 10pm rather than 9am when you stepped on the gas and REAR-ENDED ME! Maybe you were just too busy freaking out ...

If you just would carry the lunch box like I told you to, you wouldn't have to." Ackward Teen - "But lunchboxes are lame. Only little kids have those." Mom - "Yeah, well they don't have bruised bananas, now do they?" Aaaannnnnnddd scene! S eriously though, check out these new banana guards . Courtesy of Geekologie .

I feel like I see this baby everywhere! Why must you follow me to whatever supermarket I go, peering out from the aisles w/ your big baby mayonnaise eyes!? Who buys this? Stop putting mayonnaise on everything! Blahh ! And look, I'm not the only one who feels this way. Look, I'm all for a little mayo on my sammiches and in some potato/mac salad, but know when to say when, people. Bottom line: Mayonnaise shrimp w/ candied walnuts - yay ! Mayo- gartia - boo! I thought I'd take a quick break from work (which is getting busier by the moment and making it really hard to procrastinate) to blog about this fantastic sale: I know I alert all 5 of you, my dear readers, to things that are free out there in the world. This time, it's a sale. Not free, but pretty affordable. Threadless.com is having their $10 t-shirt sale, where yes, every t-shirt is $10. It's a pretty good sale and they've got some new shirts up on their site like this one: As I've posted before, I really like threadless.com for their different, but not weird T's. I've even given them as gifts to some of my friends. And at $10 a pop, you don't have to decide between these this one: Or this one: You can get both! Personally, I'm going to have to get this one . Even though I do like me some pickles. Hurry up though! The sale only lasts until Sept. 3rd! Ok that's it! Nose back to the grindstone.

So tonight was the finale of "So You Think You Can Dance". I am brave enough to admit that I love this show. The performers are truly talented, and for once I feel like the eliminations are not just based on popularity but actual knowledge*. There's not a Sanjaya in the whole top 20. Plus, what else is there to watch in the summertime? That being said, I was very excited about tonight's finale. I thought that the top 4 were all deserving of the win, although I must confess that I really didn't want Lacey or Neil to take it all. Lacey's an excellent performer, but a) oversold almost every performance with her facial expressions and her pointing and b) never was as strong or had as much polish as the other three. Neil improved so much throughout the show, but I felt that if he won it, it would just be due to the screaming pre-teen/teenage popular vote. Sabra has been a favorite of mine, coming to the forefront halfway in the season, and Danny is just ama...

You've got to be kidding me

Either this is a farce, or I just read about the densest man in the world . Place him in the same group as the guy who had a nail in his head, and the woman who didn't know that she was pregnant until she was crowning.

Yay for the FNE! and for the York too!

Even since the local Albertson's closed up last year, I've been wondering what would take it's place. Too big of a space for Trader Joe's, but too small for a Vons. What IS going in there is a store called " Fresh&Easy " (I, for one, opt for calling it the "FNE" or "effin-E"). Finally! A supermarket that we can quickly jet out to when we need eggs or something that won't take 45 minutes to get thru. (I'm looking at you Albertsons!!! and to a certain extent: the Ralphs on Verdugo and Colorado!!!) From what I hear, it's a chain from Britain specializing in fresh food that you can take home and quickly prepare. Which is fantastic to me because unlike some people I know , I am lazy in preparing dinner, especially when I get home late after work. So, quick & easy is good for me! The fact that it's also fresh is even better! The building is too big for just the FNE, so hopefully, some other businesses will move in....

I like to sleep. Many that know me already know this. I like to sleep. I'm definitely more of a "night-person" who hits the snooze button every chance I get until the last possible moment when I have to get up to get ready for work (that's called the drop-dead time). I set my alarm for about 45 minutes earlier than the drop-dead time in order to wake myself up slowly and not oversleep. In theory this works. Another thing I do to ensure that I wake up on time is to set my alarm clock to 92.3 Hot Jamz/the Beat/whatever it's called now. Because there is nothing better than to wake up to funk/r&b in the morning. It could be Rick James one day, Beyonce the next. And it usually sticks in my head throughout the day, unlike NPR or some other talk radio station. However, this morning, I was gently awoken by the soothing voices of Color Me Badd. Yes. That's what I said. Color Me Badd. Now, I did enjoy them when they first came out with their songs. I ad...

Silly, but it makes me giggle

"Snape, Snape, Sev-er-us Snape..."

Now I'm blind.

Well, this weekend was quite an eventful one. Friday night, the hubband, my friend George, and his wife all went to the Dodger game. This rematch ended quite unlike the first game we went to in June. We lost, committed some dumb errors (there is a reason you learn how to call a fly ball in Little League, you know), and we didn't see anyone remotely like this . I'm afraid that he might be a rare sighting, much like a shooting star. Sigh. After the game, we all went and waited for the release of the new Harry Potter book. I finished it in two days. I would have probably finished it in one, but there were other things to do. It was excellent, although I'm going to have to re-read it to clear up a few things. The crowd at the Barnes & Noble was crazy! There were people dressed up as witches and wizards - a few had stuffed owls too. There was even a guy dressed like Hagrid. The only downside was this weird couple that kept making out in the aisles. And it wasn...

Free Birthday ice cream from Coldstone Creamery & Baskin-Robbins ! I know this isn't exactly breaking news, but for people who don't know or forgot, these two places offer free scoops of ice cream for your birthday EVERY YEAR! All you have to do is go to their websites and sign up for their birthday list. Then, every year on your special day, they send you a coupon for a free ice cream. The Coldstone offer is much better than the BR one. They give you on free Medium (I hate the whole "love it" "like it" say of sizing. Really? I have to say that? Please.) scoop of any of their classic creations. You save about $5+. BR on the other hand, just gives you a free kids scoop, basically. Although, a) beggers can't by choosers and b) maybe a junior scoop is all we really need, tubby. ("And Leon is getting laaaaaarger!") So sign up & enjoy~! At least you know that someone is guaranteed to remember your birthday.

Lucky Birthday Weekend in Las Vegas

Image
So I've finally gotten around to posting about my birthday weekend. I must admit, half of it was because of laziness and half of it was because I actually was being productive for the early part of the week. I had been planning this trip with my friends since last year, so I was anxious to see what awaited us. Would it be really lucky, hitting sevens all the way, with us (14 total) coming home in a limo? Or would we all get super sunburned out in the 120 degree heat , watching the tourists from Alabama drink their huge margarita bongs? Either way, my goals were to: have a fun time with my friends, gamble a bit, relax, and get a free drink at the craps table. Anyway, here's my recap: FRIDAY - Started out wonderfully because the hubband and I first stopped off at the Kwik-E-Mart in Burbank for some coffee and donuts (mmmmmm.....donuts). The store really looks great - they even have a caricature of Principal Skinner spray painted on the side of the store, courtesy of "...

Check out the website for Burger King . You can load up any picture and grow a moustache. Then you can groom to your hearts delight and send someone a nice country song . The controls are kinda hard to control, but with time, I think that you could get a real nice 'stache.

Procrastinating again...

Well, I just got back from a wonderful birthday trip to Las Vegas, and given that I'm me, the post about that wonderful weekend is not done yet. In fact, I haven't really started it yet. But, it'll be good! I promise...Plus, I got to go to the Kwik-E-Mart and took pictures! In the meantime, here's a few fun links to procrastinate with: Well There's That - Shauna's blog where you can find her musings and tips for life. Bonus points for her for the best line of the day: Hemroid cream: Good For More Than Just Your Ass Threadless .com - This site has great, fun T-Shirts for like 15-20 bucks. For anyone who likes my Basement of the Alamo shirt, I got it from here. Can't Hardly Wait - A couple of weeks ago, the hubband and I caught this playing on TNT or some basic cable network that plays old movies back-to-back-to-back over the weekend. TBS, I'm looking at you... But anyway, I remember watching it when it first came out - nothing special. But this ...

Who needs the Kwik-E-Mart? I DOOOOOOOOOO!

In case you haven't heard, 7 Eleven has transformed some of their stores into Kwik-E-Marts to promote the new Simpsons Movie . Given that LA is so huge, Fox/7 Eleven has wisely decided to convert 2 locations for Southern California. Woo Hoo for you Fox/7 Eleven! Nobody likes to drive over the hill, no matter which way you are going. I'll post some pics when I actually get in the store (long lines abound), but for now, enjoy these I found .

So, courtesy of Pop Candy , I found this website called Soundpedia.com . It seems to be a FREE music site where you can watch videos, listen to albums, etc. You can also register and create playlists that you can share with others. It's like iTunes, except you can listen for free to entire songs. A couple of cool features include a tab that shows you the lyrics of the song as it plays and a tab entitled "Relation" that shows you the relative things/bands/genres/influences/feelings that is associated with your band/song/genre. For example, I typed in Depeche Mode. It came up with artists like: The Cure, Morrisey, Kraftwerk, A Flock of Seagulls (?), etc. It also lists other members that have "favorited" your band so you can connect with other "insert band name here" fans from around the world. I ended up finding a kindred soul who likes No Doubt, Depeche Mode, and Barenaked Ladies. Now I know that's a weird combo, but this girls' playlist...

Chew on this!

Okay, so I'm still trying to recover from a 2 hour Pilates class that I took on Saturday. (Why take both the beginner and intermediate class? Because the teacher offered both for the price of one and I wouldn't be my mother's daughter if I didn't take it.) So while I wobble around, chew on these things: -The website for The Simpsons Movie is up and running. There's a couple of games and the trailer to watch. Plus, you can make yourself as a Simpsons character. As for the trailer, it's okay. I realize that they're trying to send up the whole summer Blockbuster thing, but it doesn't seem to fit The Simpsons, but the end makes it all worth it. Trust me. -The food critic for LA Weekly, Jonathan Gold, has released his 99 essential restaurants to visit. The whole list is in the latest issue, plus on their website. There's a lot of restaurants that I have never heard of, or have heard of but haven't gone to, as well as some old favorites that...

Oh Bob, how I miss you so already. C'mon ESPN, get off your duff & hire the guy! "...and the Gonzaga Bulldogs beat the Arizona Wildcats in a close game in Tuscon. Speaking of animals, help control the pet population, have your pet spayed or neutered. That's all for tonight, I'm Bob Barker for Sportscenter."

You know how I love FREE STUFF

Shauna just tipped me off to a free happenin's at LACMA . There are events throughout the weekend, but Friday seems to be the most fun. Sometimes I don't like museums because they make me sleepy, but a DJ and a free screening of "Hairspray" makes me change my mind. You do have to RSVP though.

Cute little indie

Image
A couple of months ago, I was able to go a screening of "Rocket Science" with the Hubband and another friend of mine. It's about this teenage boy with a stuttering problem that joins the debate team because of a certain girl. And he's got some really random and weird friends and family that make it charming. It's a really cute and funny movie with great uses of Violent Femmes music. Not a easy combination. I highly recommend it. Here's the trailer for it. Bonus fun fact: The guy that plays Ben Wekselbaum also was Hunter, Jan's assistant on "The Office", before she got canned. I wonder if he'll be Ryan's now... UPDATE: That guy was also just listed as Claire's new boyfriend on "Heroes". Guess that answers the Ryan question.

Let's Go Dodgers!

Image
Went to the Dodger game last night w/ the hubband, George the Mets fan, and his wife. It was a good game, with solid scoring by the boys in blue and plenty of junk food to eat. But, it was a little shocking to go and see all the mess that the Dodger fans were saying to the Mets fans. It was like all the Dodger fans turned into big bullies. I've been going to see the Dodgers since I was a little one and this by far was the worst harrassment that I've seen. And these weren't even the Angels or the Giants. What's up with that Dodger fans? Why be hatin'? Especially when we're up 9 to 1? Another added bonus of the night and my vote for favorite fan
